TeamAwayday The Fun But Ineffective Awayday

Symptoms of the 'fun but ineffective' awayday include:

  • You have a sense that the team has bonded in a way they hadn't before, but this seems a bit too woolly to justify the cost of the event to your boss

  • You're wary of bringing too much 'serious' content into an awayday, for fear this will spoil the 'fun' element

  • Everyone feels enthusiastic at the end of the day, but this is hard to maintain back at work.
Our proposed treatment:

  • Separating the 'fun' bits from the 'serious' bits seems to us to be an inefficient way of designing an awayday. Our experience in running creative problem solving sessions means we can find innovative ways to design exercises which use 'fun' experiential activities to raise and deal with live business issues

  • The event needs to be followed up and linked solidly back into the business. Senior management sponsorship and support will be necessary so that following up agreed actions becomes part of the team's job, not an 'ideal world' wish list.
